I have incluede a picture of the new Even Song Therapy harp. It
has 26 strings, from C one octave below Middle C: 3 1/2 octaves.
The package includes Walnut or Cherry harp. C and F Loveland levers,
padded carring bag, cradle stand, strap and buttons for playing
standing up, harp book tuning wrench all for $999. This is the perfect
harp for taking to church, school, hospital, or the park.
Of all the comments I hear when when I display the harps at festivals
and shows, the most common is "Wow, a harp. I've always wanted
to play a harp, but I didn't know you could buy one." Many
people don't realize that traditional or folk harps are becoming
so popular and affordable. Once you start paying attention to harps,
they start showing up everywhere. Numerous teachers give lessons
and builders are making ever better instruments. The Folk Harp Society
publishes a quarterly journal and holds a convention every other
year. Harp recordings are popular.
Probably the biggest area of growth is using the harp as an instrument
of healing. Both the use of the hands on the strings to restore
the health of the nervous system and the creative process of making
music to restore the mind lead one to better health. When you start
looking for a harp to buy, I hope you will seek out other harp players
for advice and give the Stoney End harp a try.
All of our harps have a similar construction. We use solid Walnut
or Cherry wood for the structural frame and pinblock. The plywood
side and back panels are inserted into dado cuts in the solid corners
and the base. This makes a durable and strong, yet very lightweight
harp body. Our soundboards are the heart of our good sound. We use
a Finnish aircraft grade 3 millimeter Birch laminate. This provides
exceptional strength with low weight and allows us to make cutouts
on both the bottom and top ends of the string band. This opens up
the soundboard and makes it free to vibrate over its entire surface,
something that thicker, stiffer, more confined soundboards cannot
do. No other small harp is able to produce the good sound that ours
do. We believe that we produce harps with the best combination of
good sound, and affordable price anywhere in the world today.
When you order one of our harps, you can choose between American
Black Walnut or Cherry wood. Both are finished with 3 clear coats
of Deft brand Nitrocellulose Laquer. Most of our harps are strung
with Nylon, but any of them can be strung with wire for a clear
bell-like sound. Zither tuning pins are standard on all except the
Braunwen harp, but Thru pins are available. We install Loveland
sharping levers made by Bob Bunker. We believe these are the finest
levers on the market today. Two grades of carrying case are available
for each model.
Many people enjoy having a personalized harp with unique decorations.
We are able to offer sereral ways to make the harp one of a kind.
The easiest is to have your harp decorated with the hand tinted
silk screen design
that is featured on the Aniversery Briar Rose. The cost is $75 for
a floor harp or $50 for a lap harp. We also offer custom woodburned
and painted designs by a local artist, Kathy Pawlenchko-White. The
cost varies from $125 to $175 depending on which harp and which
design is chosen. She can do Lions,
Dragons, Galloping horses,
Horse heads, Celtic
Crosses or borders, Hollyhocks,
Roses,
Irises, Hawks,
American Goldfinches, or Kestrials. She also can do a completely
original design to your order for additional cost.
One of the most exciting and growing areas of harp interest is
in our double strung harps. Five years ago we heard Liz Cifini playing
this wonderful echoing music, while balancing a harp on each shoulder.
She said what she wanted was a harp with a row of strings and full
levers on each side. Without knowing how we were going to do it
we fearlessly said "Sure, we can make a harp like that"
The next year we showed it to her. She loved it used it on her recordings
and the interest has been growing steady since then.
Double harps are usually tuned with both sides alike. but you
can tune them different for a chromatic harp. You can play anything
that a single strung harp can as well as echoing music and Welsh
triple strung harp music. One of the advantages of the small portable
double harp is the ability to transpose the low notes usually played
by the left hand up into the range of the harp. Now you can practice
music written for a larger harp on your three octave harp without
having your hands hitting the same strings.
Those who attended the Folk Harp Conference in Olympia, Washington,
will remember the excitement caused by the new chromatic cross strung
harps. Ben Brown's tireless promotion of this old idea made new
again has born fruit. The scheme is so sensible that it is hard
to understand why it lost popularity. Now you can play all the white
notes with the left hand on the bottom of the crossing. and reach
up just over the crossing to get the sharps and flats. The similarity
to the chromatic piano is obvious. With the left hand you get the
naturals above the crossing and the sharps below. With just a little
practice it seems perfectly natural. With the three- and then two
and then three spacing of the sharps it is as easy to find your
place as on a piano. Our cross strung three octave is the same price
as the double but since you don't need levers the instrument ends
up much cheaper.
